Estonian Optometrists Association

Estonian Optometrists Association unites and represents Estonian optometrists (“Eesti Optometristide Selts” in Estonian language). The aim of the association is to raise professional qualifications and develop cooperation between specialists and organizations in different fields. Also, to be aware of the necessity and importance of optometrists in terms of public health.

Since 1998, optometry can be studied at the Tallinn Health Care College. Acquiring a higher education in optometry lasts 3,5 years in full-time study.”

The tasks of an optometrist are:

  • examining vision
  • prescribing glasses
  • fitting contact lenses
  • consulting on eye health
  • performing different vision tests
  • examining ocular health

Visit an optometrist when you need a prescription for glasses, new glasses, contact lenses or first consultation on ocular health.

Optometrist or ophthalmologist?

As a rule, an ophthalmologist is consulted for eye diseases, while an optometrist deals with the needs of a healthy eye. However, if a condition indicating an eye disease should arise during prescription of glasses, fitting of contact lenses or follow-up check-ups, then it is definitely necessary to consult an ophthalmologist.
